Meet Royal Fat
Our most EPIC ingredient, meet Royal fat.
The core of our first non-toxic cosmetic line, the EPIC line, is based on this unique, “epic” ingredient rarely found in beauty products. Let’s take a look at this precious ingredient.
This amazing material has deep roots in human history and is intimately linked to our tradition and cultural heritage. You can get a pretty good picture on the importance of tallow for our civilization when you look into its history as a fuel. Well, royal fat is one of the very first fuels used - yes, even before beeswax, which made its appearance around 1500 BC. The ancient Romans used tallow to create the first candles. The demand and use of tallow for bringing light into homes and public spaces grew so much that around 1300 the tallow candle makers professional association was formed in the UK. This professional guild was granted by King Henry VI a proper Coat of Arms and later, received a Royal Charter upgrading it to a company with official regulatory duties on oil trade (called livery companies) in 1462. “The Worshipful Company of Tallow Chandlers” is one of the ancient livery companies of the City of London and held significant power in commerce until other candle-making materials, gas and electricity took over.
But tallow wasn’t only used for bright nights, but also for brilliant meals! Turns out tallow is absolutely edible, stable at room temperature (perfect for cooking) and in fact very nutritious, full of oil-soluble vitamins and minerals. In the UK, tallow remains well known and is said to be the culinary "secret" behind the best fish and chips, the country's national dish. Even today, we can easily find tallow for cooking sold in jars.
Obviously, we couldn't leave out its amazing properties for skin and its long use for cosmetics. Turns out royal fat is super emollient, which is why soaps and ointments based on tallow have a special place in the history of cosmetics. Tallow consists of similar lipids to that of our skin, which allows it to be easily and quickly absorbed, without leaving a greasy feeling. This is one of the reasons why it leaves the skin so soft and nourished. The other reason is its high content in vitamins and antioxidant substances, which is thankfully preserved, since tallow is only processed in low temperatures. Before the age of vegetable oils and synthetic materials, soaps with royal fat were considered of superior quality. Not only for their hardness and durability (they don't melt easily), but also for how soft they left the skin after use.
Royal fat is definitely one of our most EPIC ingredients and the key behind the immense transformational power of our non-toxic cosmetics.
We love it and we know you will love it too...
